Hydrocyclone is applied: for classification of materials by fineness (classifiers); separation of excess of water and slimes from granular material (thickeners); minerals concentration on density, including in heavy liquids or the weighted fine-grained mineral suspended mixtures (separators); purifications of liquid of solid particles (clarifiers).

Depending on inlet pressure there are  forcing hydrocyclones — gauge pressure at inlet over 100 kPas, low pressure — it is less than 100 kPas and vacuum — inlet pressure is less than atmospheric. Hydrocyclone (fig.) consists of short cylindrical (upper) part with a branch pipe for tangential input of an effluent (on a tangent to a cylinder surface) and conic (lower) part with an opening in cone top for unloading of sand (coarse-grained, condensed or heavy fraction of an effluent).

Taper angle for classification and condensation 10-20°, lighting 10-20°, sink-float 30-45°, concentration in water 90-120 °. The upper part of the cylinder is closed by a cover in the center of which the drain branch pipe is installed serving for unloading fine-grained, liquefied, less dense material, than an initial effluent.
